Senseless

Wednesday, Apr. 18, 2007 @ 10:16 p.m.

I'm still in shock over the whole Virginia Tech thing. There is nothing more tragic than dying for completely no reason at all.

There's plenty of finger pointing going on right now, about how "it could have been prevented", "it was the fault of the college president", etc., but I just wish they would JUST FRIGGIN' SHUT UP. Finding a scapegoat will NOT help anything, especially in a situation like this when we already KNOW who the culprit is. Yes, we know he's already dead and thus no further action can be done, but that doesn't mean you have to look for #2 on the list!

"They could have had a better warning system", "They should have known, that guy had obvious psychiatric problems"... all true, but C'MON. Is that really anything to go on? A five-year-old in kindergarten displays antisocial behavior by playing with matches and setting the curtains on fire. Does that mean that he'll grow up to be an arsonist, and thus "we should have known better" and thrown him into prison at age five? Furthermore, hindsight is always 20/20, and you can look for any truths you want if you look hard enough and manage to convince yourself, like in horoscope readings! If Joe Schmoe went on a killing rampage tomorrow, people would no doubt come up with ridiculous things like "He was very good at violent video games, we shoulda known"; "He was always very quiet and a bit of a loner, we shoulda known"; or "His mother should have anticipated his behavior and stopped him from going to school that day". BULLSHIT! Just SHUT THE HELL UP!!! IT DOESN'T ACHIEVE ANYTHING!!!!!!!

Trying to plan better emergency communication systems and tactics? Learning from mistakes? Definitely the thing to do. I realize that this doesn't reverse the events of that fateful day, but that is the BEST we can do for now. Looking back at "what coulda/shoulda/woulda been" achieves NOTHING constructive. SO PLEASE FRIGGIN' STOP IT!!!

Aren't things already horribly tragic enough as it is? Do we really need more mud being slung around, and do we really need more lives ruined? All those innocent students... lives full of potential and endless possibilities... prematurely wiped out for no good reason at all. And those professors, who could have gone on to inspire scientists who may have gone on to be tomorrow's Einsteins... extinguished.

Senseless. It's just an unnecessary catastrophe. Watching the virgils on TV is enough to make me cry and mourn for the people that I didn't know.

This country needs to gawd damn realize that the existing gun laws aren't working. How many such tragedies will it take before the powers that be finally start smelling the coffee and abandoning the archaic "It's a gift from our forefathers, so we must keep it" mentality?!??
