| RIP Del MartinWednesday, Aug. 27, 2008 @ 7:14 p.m. Sad news - Del Martin, legendary LGBT rights activist and pioneer, has passed away today. I doubt anyone who's not in the activism circle would know who she is, but she's been fighting for LGBT rights for over five decades. Recently, in recognition of her contributions, San Francisco mayor (and total hottie - *giggle*) officiated her *legal* marriage to her partner of over 55 years, Phyllis Lyon. Not only that, they were the first same-sex couple to be wed after the California Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriages should be legal. She was 87 years old. It sucks that she died, but I cannot think of a better time for her to pass on - right after she was able to get legally married to the person she loved. For all her work, that has got to be quite a cherry on top of the sundae. As far as her life is concerned, she won. She won't have to worry about whether or not voters overturn the Supreme Court decision in November, because as far as she's concerned, she died legally married to her lover. And that's something that nobody can ever take away from her. How many others can say that? Rest in peace, Del. We thank you for all your sacrifices over the decades.
