Cost of living (Literally)

Why is it that in the US, you have to pay to see your own credit history and credit score?

It just sounds so ridiculous to me. Okay, the 3 major credit bureaus are TransUnion, Experian and Equifax. So... you have a credit file in EACH of those companies, BUT they don't communicate with each other. So that means that depending on which companies report your credit records to whom, you might end up having a better score at one, and a crappy score at another. If you want to apply for a loan or a credit card or finance something, that company will check your credit records with just ONE of those bureaus (which, as life always happens, will inadvertently be the one with the crappiest score), and what it says about your credit history will be the gospel truth, cast in stone, complete with assorted mistakes, misreports, and the whole nine yards. And that's supposed to be a fair assessment of my spending habits?? It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

And you have to pay them if you want to know what your credit score is. So... since you want to know where you stand in all 3 companies, you have to pay them ALL. Identity theft is becoming more and more prevalent, and the only thing to do is to check your credit score and reports regularly... which is now pretty much a whole separate industry on its own. You wanna know if you got any bad or wrongly-inserted items in your record? You gotta pay. It's ridiculous!!!!

Just imagine this: You're in college, you take an exam, but you won't be able to know your grade unless you pay a fee. It's the furthest thing away from being fair. Why do I have to pay for MY OWN information?? Shouldn't I have a right to know how I'm doing? It's like demanding you to pay if you want to find out what your blood type is. Or your date of birth. "Absurd" doesn't even begin to describe it.

Just makes me so mad how some things are so screwed up, even in this day and age of technological advancements and all that crap.
